Using MLA or APA Format in Google Drive

MLA Format

Many professors require class papers formatted using MLA or APA guidelines, but you don’t have to use Microsoft Word to achieve that.

All Boise State students have access to Google Drive via their BroncoMail/Google Apps accounts. Google Drive, while featuring online file storage and sharing capabilities, is also the home of Google Docs.

Using an MLA or APA template with Google Docs is easy, and you can even save your document as a Microsoft Word file if your instructor requires that format for submission.

MLA Format for Google Docs

Log in to Google Apps/BroncoMail and go to Google Drive.

Select Create > Document, then File > New > From template…

Click Public Templates at top-left to ensure you’re viewing all available templates, then search for MLA:

MLA Templates

You can preview templates for a peek. If you find you want to use, click the tiny Use this template button next to the template.

APA Format for Google Docs

Log in to Google Apps/BroncoMail and go to Google Drive.

Select Create > Document, then File > New > From template…

Click Public Templates at top-left to ensure you’re viewing all available templates, then search for APA:

APA templates

You can preview templates for a peek. If you find you want to use, click the tiny Use this template button next to the template.

Save As a Microsoft Word Document

When you’re ready to save your Google Doc as a Microsoft Word file (either as a finished document, or to continue editing your file in Word), select File > Download as from the Google Docs menu and choose Microsoft Word.
