Deep Freeze: Secure Public and Multi-User Computers

Deep FreezeThe University has recently obtained a site license for Deep Freeze software. Deep Freeze protects computers from any changes made to the machine, whether it’s someone changing the desktop background, adding or removing desktop icons, browsing unsafe or offensive websites, or installing software. The next time the computer reboots, the system reverts to its previous state.

Deep Freeze is already in use in many campus computer labs, assuring a consistent, stable computing environment for students. Deep Freeze is also employed in most public “kiosk” machines on campus. But Deep Freeze can also be used with computers that are shared among employees each day, such as a student employee workstation, or front-desk computers featuring rotating employees throughout the day.

Deep Freeze can be scheduled to “thaw” at a given time, allowing Windows updates and software patches to be installed to keep computers safe and secure.

If you’re interested in using Deep Freeze within your college or department, call the OIT Help Desk at 426-4357 or contact your area or college network administrator.
