The Long Arm of the RIAA

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) continues to investigate and prosecute illegal downloading of copyrighted music, and is now enlisting the assistance of universities across the country to send “settlement letters” to campus users alleged to have partaken in illegal downloading. These settlements average about $3,000 – $6,000 each.

Boise State University acts in compliance with notices of violation received from the RIAA in accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Should you receive a notice of violation from the RIAA, you may want to seek independent legal counsel before responding.

The University also receives notices of violation from other content providers, such as representatives of copyright holders for movies, video games and software.

Please be vigilant with downloads, particularly when utilizing University resources.
